Top 10 Monarchs in Video Games

Chaos Hour's Jubilee Special! The Top Ten Video Game Monarchs!

In honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee (Hello band wagon, I am on you!), we over in the realm of Chaos decided to compile a list of video game’s Top Ten Regal Rulers. From Twilight Princesses to Koopa Kings.

10 King Dedede (Kirby Series)

The Triple D is a recurring antagonist in the Kirby series; the greedy ruler of planet Pop Star and a penguin with a hammer... that’s all we needed to know to get him on our list. His frequent attempts to squash the little puff ball that is Kirby, both in his own franchise and in the Brawl arena, make Dedede a formidable foe, but he also has a softer side. On D’Preciation Day, when the penguin King believed Kirby to be dead, he was actually sad and upon realizing the little mochi was alive - he was actually ecstatic. D’aw!

9 The Red Queen (American McGee’s Alice)

As far as all-controlling monarchs go, this one is a doozie. I could hardly let this tentacle stretching Queen of Hearts go un-noticed as she is part of one of the darkest PC platformers and has recently re-appeared in stunning form in the new Alice: Madness Returns. The Red Queen is the main antagonist in this cult favorite and controls the whole of Wonderland with an iron... well, I want to say fist but let’s face it, I don't know what those things are.

8 Simba (The Lion King)

Here is a game so many people forget about, but when they remember it they remember it fondly. One of the few film-to-game tie ins I have ever loved and played over and over again (that and the Aladdin game - gods the lava still gives me nightmares), the Sega Megadrive adaptation of The Lion King film. How can you get much cooler than Simba? He’s a lion for a start and his dad is Darth Vader. ‘Nuff said.

7 Queen Metroid (Metroid II: Return of Samus)

The final boss of the GameBoy Epic, Return Of Samus, and Wii’s Metroid: Other M, this royal reptilian makes my thumbs and trigger finger itch just to think of her. The leader of the Metroid mutations and mother of most of your enemies, she is the veritable Queen Bee of the Metroid universe and boy does it take a helluva lot of missiles to take her down. Tough as old crocodile skin and twice as scaly, Queen Metroid is a welcome addition to our list and a top matriarchal monarch.

6 Bowser (Super Mario Brothers Series)

People tend to forget that this formidable looking race-cart driver is actually also known as the Koopa King. Not only has he got a host of minions, turtles and mushrooms willing to die for him but he is also a pretty good interior designer, creating castles, dungeons and lava pits which can cause issues for even your most persistent of handymen.

5 Queen Myrrah (Gears of War Series)

The Queen of The Locust Horde, this charismatic monarch leads her people to the surface of her world in order to colonize it. For those people who think she doesn’t deserve a place on the list - look at Cole Train, now look back at Myrrah; look at Dom, now look back at Myrrah; look at Marcus Fenix, now look back at Myrrah. This chick is their nemesis! And anyone worthy of constantly foiling the plans of guys as awesome as the COG... well... she must be pretty badass.

4 Lich King (World of Warcraft)

As far as highly anticipated nemeses go, this Azerothian Antagonist was definitely one to be reckoned with. The master and lord of the Scourge, which he rules from the Frozen Throne atop the Icecrown Glacier. Sure, you may not have held a street party in his honor... unless he telepathically commanded it - then I am sure the Pimms and Earl Grey tea would flow like the blood of his many enemies.

3 Princess Zelda (The Legend of Zelda Series)

Do not let her beauty fool you, this Princess can hold her own. Whether it be on the field of brawl or in disguise as the ninja-like Sheik (Ocarina of Time) or piratical Tetra (Wind Walker), this princess has guts and we like it! While Princess Peach may deserve a mention for her dedication to the Nintendo throne over the years, Zelda knocks her off the top spot for Nintendo Princess due to her heroic fighting skills and stoic silence in a tough spot (unlike the whining Mushroom Kingdom Damsel in Distress).

2 You! (Fable Series)

Despite the most recent game’s flaws, you can’t deny that you are pretty awesome! Yes. You. I’m talking to you. In the Fable-verse you slay Hobbes and Hollow Men all to protect or oppress your very own kingdom. Also, with Lionhead’s new found obsession with downloadable customization, you look pretty amazing whilst you’re doing it.

1 Martin Septim (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion)

The illegitimate son of Emperor Uriel Septim VII of Tamriel, Martin is a key figure in the main quest-line for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so if you don’t like spoilers look away now... Dude turns into a dragon. A DRAGON! You can’t get much cooler than an unwitting Emperor voiced by Sean Bean who turns into a dragon to save the world from a horde of Daedra and Mehrunes Dagon. If anyone deserves a procession through the streets and concert by Gary Barlow, it’s this guy!
