Overwatch is the latest highly competitive Arena Shooter from Blizzard which features an impressive roster of unique and exciting characters which each boast powerful abilities and interesting skill sets. Ever since its release Overwatch has seen a spike in popularity not only in casual multiplayer but also in competitive E-Sports. Overwatch is now rivaling the viewership of League of Legends in some countries and with the title only having a month or two shelf time that's incredibly impressive.
E-Sports teams and Tournaments have flooded to begin creating an highly evolving and competitive scenario and with the talks of various games having cross platform support Overwatch will run into a dilemma. Cross Platform play would enable Users of Overwatch on the PC to play with users all over the world on their Playstation 4 and XBox one Consoles. If Overwatch was indeed cross-platform then it would cripple the competitive scene.
There's a dark stigmatism when it comes to the 'PC Master Race' in which many PC users claim that playing games on their powerful gaming rigs is the ultimate experience. However a lot of console gamers claim that you can't beat the chilled atmosphere a couch console provides and I will be honest I personally agree with both statements. However Overwatch on the PC has the support for both Gaming Mice and Gaming Keyboards which allow the user to not only have access to highly accurate hardware but they also get to customize their gaming peripherals in whichever way they want.
The customization that you get with the XBox One Pad and PS4 Pad is very limited. Where-as with a Gaming Mouse for example the 'Razer Taipan' you are able to not only adjust which buttons do what. You can also configure it to change the DPI and sensitivity of your aim. Gaming Mice allow for a more hand-eye co-ordinated approach to competitive gaming which if Overwatch Was Cross Platformed then it would be bad news for console gamers.
Many PC Gamers claim that the reaction time for Keyboards and Mouse is far superior to that of the consoles controllers. If Cross Platform was introduced for Overwatch then the console gamers would be heavily disadvantaged in terms of reaction time and Accuracy. The issue has been further pushed forward as Blizzard announced a recent NERF for Torbjorn's turrets within the games.
Torbjorn's turrets auto-aim on the enemy and provide pin-point accuracy however Console Gamers claimed this was un-fair as they were not able to match the turrets in both their accuracy and speed. Thus Blizzard have updated a nerf which reduced the combat ability of the turrets where as PC Gamers have had little to no issues dealing with the threat.
Possibly a way in which Cross Platform for Overwatch may work is if Competitive Mode was restricted to playing with other players which are using the same console as you. Where-as quick mode was enabled so everyone could play with everyone. Although I believe Cross Platform is important for the future of multiplayer gaming I strongly believe a game should be made from the outset with the objective to cater for all platforms. Cross Platform should not be taken likely as it may cripple an already popular competitive scene.
